    For Het Nieuwe Instituut, the health and safety of our visitors and employees is paramount. Due to the recent developments concerning COVID-19 and the associated restrictions on travel to the USA and the organization of public events in museums, the institute has decided to close the museum, including Sonneveld House. The closure will be for a period of two weeks up until 1 June.Het Nieuwe Instituut is following developments closely and will open its doors again as soon as possible.

    From September to March 2019, the blue upholstered strap chair designed by Marcel Breuer in 1924 will be on show at Sonneveld House, Het Nieuwe Instituut’s museum house. The chair is on loan from Klassik Stiftung Weimar’s Bauhaus collection: in the run-up to the Bauhaus centenary celebrations in 2019, they are presenting a series of original items from their collection at various museums under the title Bauhaus zu Gast. Marcelis and Berens will each reflect upon De Stijl as a design movement by looking at a specific interior design project.     The French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster created a work especially for Sonneveld House. Opera-house is a domestic opera based on the Sonneveld family’s arrival in their new home.     Rotterdam and Dessau were important cities for the modernist avant-garde as it gained influence in both architecture and the arts. An intense exchange of ideas occurred between the two cities, ideas that aimed at improving a disrupted society.   • Original Gispen furniture back in Sonneveld House

    Het Nieuwe Instituut has purchased two tubular-steel armchairs and a glass coffee table designed by Willem Hendrik Gispen, which originally furnished the living room of Sonneveld House. The pieces are unique and were made in 1932 specially for the Sonneveld family.
