De Stijl as interior project

14.12.2017

A duo lecture in Sonneveld House with designer Sabine Marcelis and architecture historian Hetty Berens. Marcelis and Berens will each reflect upon De Stijl as a design movement by looking at a specific interior design project. The two stories make clear that De Stijl was far from being an isolated avant-garde project but was and remains highly influential.

Berens takes the work of artist Bart van der Leck as her starting point and demonstrates how the De Stijl aesthetic is seamlessly embedded in Sonneveld House. She will look at the pastel primary colours that Van der Leck designed for department store Metz & Co, which were employed in the house alongside the colours of architect Leen van der Vlugt. Marcelis will talk about one of her light artworks, which will be placed in Sonneveld House specially for the occasion.

Hetty Berens
Hetty Berens is an architecture historian and a curator at Het Nieuwe Instituut and Sonneveld House, where she is responsible for acquisitions and collections research. She also curates exhibitions and writes and lectures on architecture and design. She curated the exhibitions Simultaneous Modernism at Sonneveld House and Architecture and Interiors: the Desire for Style at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, a partnership between the Gemeentemuseum and Het Nieuwe Instituut with pieces from the collection of Het Nieuwe Instituut.

Sabine Marcelis
Designer Sabine Marcelis employs special effects from the production process to create a magical atmosphere in her installations. In 2017, EYE International, the Netherlands Film Fund and Het Nieuwe Instituut commissioned her to design the Dutch pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival, for which she drew inspiration from De Stijl. A variant of this installation is now on display at Het Nieuwe Instituut.
